Title: Fragments of Ash
Author: Katy Regnery
Rating: 4.25 stars
I love Katy’s modern fairy-tale retellings. Fragments of Ash is inspired by Cinderella, but a little darker with a few twists. Ashley’s life may seem glamorous on the outside, growing up in Holloywood with a mother who is a supermodel. But everything is not as it seems on the outside.
When Ashley was thirteen, her mother (who to everyone else is her sister) marries a very bad man. And although she spends most of her time at her very Catholic boarding school, when she is home she avoids her step-father and her twin step-brothers when she can.
Just after turning eighteen, her mother unexpectedly dies and she is left all alone in the world apart from her Godfather Gus, who helps her escape her step-father after he makes his evil intentions known. Ashley ends up staying with a friend of Gus’s partner Jock, who is less than happy to see her.
Julian isn’t happy when he is told that he has to share his place with this unknown girl, as something happened in his past that makes it difficult to trust. But Julian is a natural protector and he becomes to see that Ashley might be in some real danger.
Ashley and Julian, after clearing away some misunderstandings get to know each other a lot better. Something romantic develops between the two but the fear of her step-father coming to get her is always hanging over their heads.
I loved this retelling of Cinderella and the relationship between Ashley and Julian. I can’t wait to read more in this delightful series.
