“Marie, you are the sine to my cosine.”
This is a smart, entertaining and beautiful romance story with a twist. Marie is supposed to be meeting her date when someone who looks nothing like his profile. Needless to say the date doesn’t go well and they part. Only later to discover that her date is a professor and her friend Fiona and Greg’s next door neighbor, Matt Simmons.
Matt is working on a study about artificial intelligence with the connection to dating and the need for companionship. Matt would like to use the data from his date with Marie, but she is hesitant at first. Marie, after having discussions with Matt about other forms of companionship and artificial intelligence, is writing an article about it for her work. This involves going to professional cuddlers and the like and if these services or robots can replace a relationship.
Through this exploration from both Matt and Marie, the two grow closer and form a strong friendship. Marie finds herself falling for the quirky scientist but Matt has sworn off long term relationships. So what is a girl to do?
Marie was a likable heroine and she knows what she wants. She is after a long term relationship and although her attraction to Matt is strong, she won’t compromise her ideals. However Matt was my favourite, he is socially awkward and can be totally clueless when it comes to matters of the heart. He steals your heart with his childlike curiosity, nerdy jokes and genius mind.
“They also rely heavily on repeated parallel matrix calculations.”
“Get out!” I said. “That’s awesome.”
He nodded. “I know.”
He then touched my nose lightly with his index finger.
“You are super cute when you pretend you know what I’m talking about.”
I loved Matt and Marie’s friendship and how they took care of and supported each other. It was almost inevitable that they would fall in love based on how close they were. This was definitely a slow burn romance but well worth the wait.
“He not only felt right, he felt like he’d been made especially for me. And I for him. For the first time in my life, I was encouraging my hopes. I allowed them to run and fly. To the sky. To the stars. Because that’s what my life was going to be from now on. Matt, me, and perpetually soaring hopes.”
Overall this was an enjoyable read and Penny Reid doesn’t disappoint. I love the authors special blend of smart romance as she discusses many relevant topics and presents things in a new light.
